Two days ago (yes, two days ago) my not-quite-11yr-old daughter suddenly started singing like an opera singer, and stunned us; I quickly found "O mio babbino caro" on you-tube, and today she is singing it and nailing it. Very impressive indeed, but something wasn't sitting quite right with me, so I Googled "should children sing opera" and ended up here. (I know nothing about singing, other than that it is fun). THANK YOU Dr Opera, and thank you everyone who commented and supported the view that pushing her to sing opera in opportunistic and egotistical talent competitions would be a big mistake. She will not be going down that road, but she will certainly be singing along to Daddy's guitar around the campfire and building happy memories of music. If one day she sings seriously, and ventures into opera, great.
Tunnershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02517988137498205357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551261045977896784.post-80872900861864902142018-11-05T12:21:03.101-05:002018-11-05T12:21:03.101-05:00Lowly retired high school band teacher here. The answer? after puberty - before that there was a serious risk of damaging her voice. We followed that advice. She is now a 22 yr-old classically trained operatic soprano with a huge voice, a love of singing, and a love for music and all the arts. When I first heard Ms. Evancho sing "O Mio Babbino" I was horrified... by so many things. It was just so inappropriate for someone her age - musically, content, etc. I had to turn it off. I cannot watch/listen to her yet - it almost feels like watching a wreck that you know is coming.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551261045977896784.post-49411445977926857582014-12-17T01:58:01.683-05:002014-12-17T01:58:01.683-05:00Hello, I love reading through your blog, I wanted ...Hello, I love reading through your blog, I wanted to leave a little comment to support you and wish you a good continuation. You're exactly the...You just don't get it. You're exactly the type of Jackie Evancho fan that many of the posters here have been railing against. You equate greatness with popularity and earnings. In the world of real opera a singer is not judged by how much money he or she makes or how many recordings he or she sells. Nobody who expresses concern for Jackie's voice is being jealous or a hater. Most of the people posting here are either classically trained singers or voice teachers or both. I, myself, am a classically trained singer. We know what we're talking about when we say that correct vocal technique is the foundation upon which all types of voices are built. We also are correct when we say that bad technique can ruin a voice...and that Jackie Evancho sings with bad technique. We're not snobs, either, and we resent being called so by the musically uneducated people who make up most of Jackie's fan base. You want her to be allowed to sing whatever she wants and express herself without having the proper training. Would you want a 12 year old aspiring neurosurgeon with no training to operate on someone's brain just because he would be expressing himself and living his dream? A child singer shouldn't be expressing herself without training either. Admittedly, that damage would only be to herself, whereas if a 12 year old "brain surgeon" performs an operation, he would be damaging another person. And don't bother telling me about Dougie Houser. That was a TV show, not real life. So Jackie is living her dreams. Will you be so happy about this when her dreams come crashing down because her voice has been ruined? I don't think so. Also, the money will be irrelevant then because Jackie appears to love to sing and her musical gift will be gone. Yo Yo Ma can buy a new cello if his is ruined. Nobody gets a second set of vocal cords. They only come two to a customer and cannot be replaced. Glenn is not a snob or a hater and neither am I or any of the other people who have expressed concern for Jackie's voice. Her musically uneducated fans, however, are pretty selfish to want her to continue singing in such a vocally damaging manner just so they can have the chance to continue listen to her.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551261045977896784.post-14668280521856288722014-05-26T10:47:14.480-04:002014-05-26T10:47:14.480-04:00One word -- Adele. No, she doesn't sing opera...One word -- Adele. No, she doesn't sing opera. But she sings in a way that takes a huge toll on her voice. The first time we heard her, my brother and I both agreed she wouldn't last three years before her voice broke down from the abuse. Right on schedule, she's toast. She has been out of the spotlight for over a year now (to have her child), but there is nothing to indicate she will be back anytime soon. Vocal abuse is vocal abuse, and the younger the singer the longer the impact is felt. Charlotte Church was a has-been by age 20. She is a celebrity now just like Paris Hilton or the Kardashians -- famous for being famous. Her music is not bad, but not great. Maybe she should have avoided smoking, too. She's in the spotlight more for legal issues than her singing, which is an obvious sign of where her career has gone. Evancho will suffer the same fate once the adults around her realize the pool of money has dried. Seen it all beforehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12151011629735346512noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8551261045977896784.post-79191828944101319082014-05-26T10:27:32.741-04:002014-05-26T10:27:32.741-04:00I realize this post is over two years old, but fee...I realize this post is over two years old, but feel the need to reply, anyway. The pig legend is just that...legend. Yes, Mozart was a famous kid, but the critics of the day realized the same thing--he was simply mimicking adults. His early compositions sound like a child wrote them. A very good child musician, but still a child. He also benefitted from writing during the classic period, when the many rules and simpler forms made it easier to compose authentically. Not saying he wasn't brilliant at it, but he was an adult before he achieved that level of skill. Not too many of his early works are ever performed because they are fairly easy and sound child-like. Great repertoire for young students, though. Mozart never adjusted to the transition from child star to responsible adult. He fell into the same trap of many child actors over the past few decades and died just short of being 36, bitter and broke. Smart of you to post anonymously. Most of us don't buy what you are selling, anyway. Sounds like you are the delusional one here, and fairly desperate to boot. She's still riding on her youth and resilience. Unmitigated, her ability to do what she does will last for maybe a number of years, but it will definitely deteriorate. Unfortunately, people like you are so selfish that you would rather a girl continue ruining her voice just because you like how it sounds.

For the record, many of the voices this man you've referenced treats, such as those of Mariah Carey and Michael Bolton, are quite ragged. He's clearly not an expert on operatic singing. It's a whole different ballgame. You clearly didn't read this article very well because you're taking all the viewpoints that he quite well rebuts. And you obviously misunderstand why we're upset about phenomena such as Jackie.
